How to Keep Your Home Safe from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and deadly gas that can build up in your home without you noticing. It can come from faulty appliances, fireplaces, generators, or cars that are running in an enclosed space. CO poisoning can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, confusion, and even death. Here are some tips on how to prevent CO poisoning and what to do if you suspect it.
– Install CO detectors in your home. These devices will alert you if the CO level in your home is too high. You should have at least one on each floor of your home, especially near bedrooms and living areas. Test them regularly and replace the batteries as needed.
– Maintain your appliances and heating systems. Have a professional inspect and service your furnace, water heater, stove, fireplace, and any other gas or oil-burning appliances at least once a year. Make sure they are properly vented and have no leaks or cracks.
– Never use generators, grills, camp stoves, or other outdoor equipment indoors or in garages, basements, or crawl spaces. These devices can produce a lot of CO in a short time. Always use them outside and away from windows, doors, and vents.
– Don’t leave your car running in an attached garage or carport. Even if the garage door is open, CO can seep into your home through cracks and openings. Turn off your engine as soon as you park your car and make sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked by snow or debris.
– Know the signs of CO poisoning and act quickly if you experience them. If you or anyone in your home feels sick, dizzy, or has a headache, get out of the house immediately and call 911. Don’t try to find the source of the CO yourself. You could lose consciousness and be unable to escape.
